Every year, millions of visitors from around the world walk through the gate bearing a the inscription: ‘Arbeit macht frei’ - Work Sets One Free. Auschwitz is one of the best-known concentration camps in the world and commemorates the lives of those who died in the during the Holocaust of World War II. Auschwitz is one of the best-known concentration camps in the world; it is a place of genocide where approximately 1.5 million people were killed during WWII. The place has remained a living monument to those that died during the Holocaust and in 1979 the concentration camp was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  Your tour to Auschwitz-Birkenau includes a visit to Auschwitz I - the administrative centre of Auschwitz death camp and Auschwitz II, designed and constructed as an extermination facility. You will see some of the surviving prison blocks, the gas chamber and the crematorium. While the genocide that took place inside Auschwitz-Birkenau is undoubtedly chilling, your guide will explain the site's history with sensitivity, explaining the key events in its history while showing you places like the gas chambers, crematoriums and exhibition halls inside the old prison blocks. The Auschwitz-Birkenau complex was established in 1940 and throughout the five years of its operation over 1.5 million 1.5 million people died there. The majority of the camp's victims were Jews, along with Poles, Gypsies, Russian POWs and members of other nationalities. The Martyrdom Museum was founded in 1947, combining the area of KL Auschwitz (Auschwitz I) in Oświęcim and the Birkenau camp (Auschwitz II) in Brzezinka; it is comprised of approximately 150 buildings and 300 ruins. The original roads, fences, watchtowers and railway ramps have all been preserved. The buildings house the collection of original exhibits and documents.

From January to May, afternoon tours start between 10.00am and 3.00pm; from June to September, afternoon tours start between 12.00pm and 3.00pm - exact pick up times will be advised upon confirmation.

Eating, smoking and photgraphy inside the buildings as well as acting in a loud manner are forbidden at the site.

Journey time to Auschwitz from Krakow is just over 90 minutes.
